Griffintown: The new Interior & Design district

Interior & Decor stores are all opening their doors in the heart of Griffintown since real estate developments are popping all around this neighborhood. Here are the 4 stores that you should visit to get some inspiration for your house or condo.

West Elm
West Elm is definitely my favorite place to buy furniture and this is where we bought most of our stuff for our condo. West Elm is located directly in Griffintown on Wellington, in a former fur warehouse and this was the first West Elm store to open its doors in Quebec. The brand was born in Brooklyn and is owned by the same company as Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma. The vast space is filled with furniture, design accessories, bedding, pillows, vases, etc. West Elm also sells kitchenware, toiletry items, cookbooks and serving pieces. The furniture and the decor have an industrial feel to it, which is perfect for the neighborhood. The company collaborates with independent designers and craft communities. You can also benefit from The West Elm Marché, where the menu features an assortment of coffee beverages (coffee from La Colombe) as well as baked goods like croissants.

EQ3 is a Winnipeg-based company that has multiple stores in Canada/US and additional stores/galleries located around the world. But, lucky for us, EQ3’s newest addition is in Griffintown, directly on Wellington. The store opened in early December and offers Canadian made, modern furniture for urban living. “Today, EQ3 is a vertically integrated company specializing in modern design for everyday life with simple, clean and functional design. Customize with fabric or leather, finishes and legs for a style all your own.” The lines are square and simple, textures are modern and the décor is natural. I’m sure Montrealers will appreciate this new addition to the district.

Ross Fraser, scion of one of this country’s oldest furniture retailing families, recently closed Fraser Furniture which would have celebrated 134 years and opened ITEM. ITEM is located on Peel, right next to the ALT hotel, and has now been open for more than a year. The store carries more contemporary elements than other stores in the area, but you can also fin industrial accessories and furniture. Brands include American design icons Michael Weiss, Jonathan Adler, Dwell Studio and Calvin Klein Furniture, British designer brands such as Tom Dixon and Trowbridge and Dutch Deluxes from Denmark. The store sells furniture and lighting, but also has a mezzanine dedicated to bath and bedroom. The store is magnificent with its 26-foot ceilings and view of the Lachine canal.

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams
If you are looking for something more classic and high end, the renowned American home furnishings lifestyle brand Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams might be just what you are looking for. “Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams is an internationally acclaimed home furnishings company offering upholstery, case goods, lighting, rugs, and accessories designed to make people comfortable.” Appart from selling high-end furniture, they also offer customers the ability to custom-order pieces. Their furnishings are often seen in magazines, on TV and in fine hotels, which is why the brand is quite acclaimed. Definitely the place to go to find elegant furniture!
